eXtracycle Electric Cargo Bike

Montana, USA

My beloved electric Xtracycle FreeRadical (eXtracycle?) longtail cargo bike electrified using a Grin kit. I finished the bike in August of 2023, and have since ridden ~3500km through ~1.5 winters. I use it for almost all of my transportation needs, from grocery shopping to towing other bikes!

Motor: RH212
Controller: Baserunner V6
Battery: 50.4V 19.6Ah, 14s4p using Samsung 50E cells inside a custom rack mount enclosure
Display: Cycle Analyst V3

I typically get anywhere from ~7 to ~12 Wh/km with the current setup, depending on throttle usage and PAS settings of course.

Future plans include powder coating the FreeRadical black, switching to a triangle/downtube battery, and maybe switching to an All-Axle motor. I've included a short overview video covering the bike in a bit more depth, and plan on making a few more showing my wintertime commutes as well as the towing capability in more detail.

First front half

I originally had a Giant Yukon as the front half, and only recently swapped it over to a Kona Unit. While the old frame was okay, I want to put the battery in the front triangle of the bike, which was not possible with the Giant. When the Kona showed up at the local community shop, it was pretty much the perfect frame for me, so the Giant is no more.

Towing capabilities

In addition to being able to carry lots of cargo, I have been able to tow other bikes with my ebike. Using old front hubs attached to the rear of the FreeRadical, I am able to carry other bikes! I've towed my road bike to the shop, and my mountain bike to trailheads.
