Judy's Pink Pedals Fatbike

Ithaca NY USA

It was with great anticipation that I awaited the coming of the Grin All-Axle fatbike motor. Over a year ago my wife Judy bought this Salsa HeyDay and I promised to motorize it for her. (It's pretty difficult to ride up the hills here in Ithaca without electrical assistance.) I've done fatbike builds in the past and a huge issue has been that typical fatbike dropouts are not strong enough to hold a motor powerful enough for a fatbike, especially if regen is desired. The motor will eventually pop out of the dropouts at the most inconvenient time, often tearing out the motor wires in the process.

Grin has solved this problem by creating a very powerful fatbike motor that works with a through-axle bike frame rather than dropouts, and has an integrated torque arm. Thank you thank you!.

For this build I used a 72v battery from Electrify capable of 50 amps continuous, so up to 4,000 watts of power. But Judy doesn't actually want that much power so we limited the bike to 2,000 watts. In this photo you see Judy's custom pink pedals and she is in her winter gear with ski pants, ski goggles and battery powered heated gloves. The bike has studded tires (it took me several hours to insert over 200 studs!) so it works well on any terrain including ice. I turned on Grin's back-pedal regen feature and Judy loves it.
