Freewheels and Cassettes
Most of our rear hub motors use the more modern cassette freehub system rather than a threaded side cover and a standard screw-on freewheel gear cluster. All of our rear motors now use the Shimano HG freehub standard, except for the eZee rear motor, which takes a threaded freewheel.
We still stock an assortment of 7,8 and 9 speed threaded freewheels with an 11 tooth smallest cog for people with 3rd party hub motors. Almost all standard threaded freewheels max out at a 14 tooth small cog, making it difficult to keep up with pedaling at faster ebike speeds. If you have a bike with a 7 speed freewheel and want to upgrade to a 8 or 9 speed, you will also need spacer washers on the end of the axle. The 8 and 9 speed freewheels will almost always extend past the axle shoulder on a hub motor. We carry 3mm or 5mm spacer washers.
