Justin's First Ebike Build

Vancouver, Canada

This is the first bike build that I completed in 2003 after discovering the Yahoo Power Assist group and the small but burgeoning community of DIY ebike builders that existed at the time. The Crysatlyte 400 series rear hub motor and 20A controller were purchased used from Joshua Goldberg in Toronto, one of the first people to be importing these early direct drive hubs into North America.

The battery pack was cobbled together from surplus NiMH cells that were pulled from old laptop batteries of the era, and held tight to the bike with tape. There were no ebike displays at this time so a multimeter was affixed to the handlebar to see how much power I was pulling and let me look at the battery voltage. This eventually became the seeds for the first Cycle Analyst devices.

My main motivation for this project was to have some inspiration to get up and climb the large hill to university and not be late for my 8am morning classes.
