Hi everyone,

I'm thrilled to share my journey of building a custom e-bike using Grin Technologies' RH212 DIY Kit and accessories. This project underscores the significance of investing in quality components for exceptional performance.

For my second e-bike build, I set out to create a versatile and enjoyable ride for cruising local cycleways and joining group rides with fellow "ebuddies". The bike needed to provide road comfort with dual suspension, operate mainly on throttle, and run on 52 volts.

I carefully selected a Giant donor bike that perfectly met my criteria—29-inch wheels, 100mm front and rear suspension travel, and ample space for a custom battery box.

Here's a breakdown of the components used:

RH212 DIY Kit including the L10 Phase Runner controller, V3 Cycle Analyst, Thumb Throttle, and CA3 MF Switch.
All these components were shipped from Vancouver to NZ by my supportive brother—huge thanks to him!

Assembling this e-bike was a rewarding DIY experience, requiring meticulous planning and problem-solving to seamlessly integrate the Grin items. I upgraded to 203mm rotors and installed an e-brake switch (horn switch) to initiate regenerative braking, effectively preserving my rotors and pads. Additionally, custom laser-cut torque arms on each side of the hub motor (10mm and 6mm respectively) reduce stress on the motor shaft during heavy regenerative braking.

To enhance the riding experience, I integrated a Grin Pedal Assist System sensor and fabricated a custom 36-pole PAS magnet ring using 3D printing technology. The PAS system has significantly improved my riding style and overall enjoyment, while still allowing for thrilling throttle-only rides.

My battery pack currently provides a usable 800 watt-hours. I've achieved an impressive 90km range before cutoff, with a comfortable 35km range using the throttle-only option for fun rides.

This project is an ongoing endeavor, with plans to potentially upgrade to 72 volts in the future.

I want to extend my sincere appreciation to Grin Technologies for their outstanding customer support. They patiently addressed my queries, guided me through the Phaserunner update process, and helped resolve technical challenges along the way.

I'm eagerly looking forward to more exciting upgrades and rides ahead!
