Last year I decided to buy an ebike to get further out of Quebec city center and also go to work with my bike and not be all sweaty. I really liked my actual bike and I didn't have the space for a second bike in a tiny apartment so a conversion kit was the best option.
I went with an All-Axle front motor, a Frankenrunner controller, a cycle analyst and a 72v/9.5A battery. Yes the battery is backwards, more details bellow :D
Custom mount for the controller
The tube mount for the Frankenrunenr was not available during the pandemic, so I made a custom mount for my rear rack that my brother 3D printed. I also originally attached the battery to the rear rack because I wanted to take the battery and controller with me when I lock the bike somewhere it turns out that the rack was still a pain to remove/attach even with the quick release.
Catastrophic failure of the rear rack
After my first 500 kilometers with the bike, the weld on the rear rack broke in three places at once and I almost lost my battery and controller. Fortunately, I was close to home and managed to bring everything back to safety. I still didn't have the proper mount for the controller so I cut the remains of the rear rack still holding the controller and bolted that section to the bottle holder. That didn't left enough clearance to mount the battery properly, so that why I have it backwards :D I’ll get the proper mount for it soonish…
Range and specs
It’s been a year since I made the conversion and i have close to 4000km done. The bike is set up to push 1500W at most, which gives me a top speed of about 55km/h but at that speed I would only make 20 km before I run out of battery. Most of the time I ride at 25 km/h which gives me a range of 80km with no human effort. I’ll add a torque sensor soon which should help increase my range and entice me to pedal more they were also out of stock during the pandemic.
Did you know that ebike are dog friendly!
I bought a nice dog trailer to take my dog with me, so he's not left alone at home and that he can also enjoy a nice ride. So far I'm not sure if he likes it, to be fair even in a car he's excited all ride and just wants to get out and look around. I think he will get used to it.
